The catalogue for this exhibition at the National Crafts Museum in Kanazawa opens up a rich world of imagination, inspired by the fusion of pop culture and artisanship. Pokémon have been around since 1996, and traditional crafting techniques for centuries or even millennia. Yet there are many similarities between the two. The raw materials used in crafts and the energy used in the manufacturing process include earth, plants, metal, water, fire, electricity, and other elements analogous to the various Pokémon types. The latter’s systems for refining, cultivating, collecting, and exchanging also seem to overlap with the skills of the craftspeople who have created these astonishing objects.
