Résumé

The People's Republic of China embraces many minority peoples in addition to the predominant Han Chinese. Their concentration in the border regions of the country is such that they were formerly referred to as "frontier people".
Whatever their appelation, they have constituted a veritable ethnic screen around the great agglomeration of Han Chinese in the valleys and plains formed by the country's major river.
Mr. Moseley's discussion of the policies of the adjacent states of Vietnam, Laos and Burma, as well as Thailand, towards their own minority communities, shows that those policies are of immediate interest of Yunnan and Kwangsi. The findings presented are based on information published in the provincial newspapers supplemented by interviews with persons from Kwangsi and Yunnan.
